Q:

why my shoulder STILL hurts after 2010 flu shot

I started this new share because I got the new flu shot 3 weeks ago- the one that contains the reg. flu and the H1N1 combined. I got it done at Walgreens. When the Dr (pharmacist, actually) put it in, it did not hurt. Even though it felt like it was in the bone and very high up. The actuall dispensing of the vaccine felt like it took longer than usual. Since then, my shoulder still hurts and I complain about it several times a day. I cannot sleep on it at night and everytime I roll over in bed, it wakes me (all night long). I have rec'd the flu shot for years and I never got this pain. For this reason, I will NOT be forcing my 10 yr old to get it because she could not tollerate this pain and would have missed many days of school thus far. Comments?

Vaccines can cause shoulder in juries and the Department of Health and Human Services knows it (which is why they compensate people who end up with adhesive capsulitis, tendinitis, bursitis, etc. after getting a flu shot or other shot). The Advisory Commission on Childhood Vaccines performed an in depth study of shoulder injuries related to vaccine administration (SIRVA) and found a definitive correlation. Information taken from

As a lawyer representing people injured by vaccines, I can attest that countless people suffer shoulder injuries after receiving flu shots and other vaccines. The injury is generally caused by the vaccine administrator injecting too high on the arm, in the shoulder region. The needle can penetrate sensitive areas of the shoulder leading to bursitis, adhesive capsulitis (frozen shoulder) and tendinitis. Most of our shoulder injury clients are women which is not a coincidence - women generally have smaller upper arms than men, allowing the needle to penetrate farther into the nerves and musculature of the shoulder. I got the flu shot from Rite Aid about 4 weeks ago (the intramuscular shot). I was sore that evening but it started feeling better with each passing day. About a week and a half ago, I woke up with arm pain right in the area where the shot was given. It's worse in the morning but still hurts in the evening. I called my doctor's office and they told me to ice it and rub it to soften it. It's very frustrating. Hurts to lift my arm up, or across.

I got the flu shot on 9/23/13 and am still having pain in the my upper arm and shoulder, was hoping to find some answers here, yet it looks like I just need to give it some more time. Totally frustrating to have this going on, have not had this happen before, will think twice about getting one next year.

October 1, 2013 my husband and I went to Walgreens to get our flu shot. When the lady gave me the shot I commented that it felt like it went into my joint. It is now Oct. 14 and I still cannot lift my arm! This is extremely frustrating! I called Walgreens and told them about my arm. He said that it happens 1 in 100 shots and that I should go see my doctor for pain meds and perhaps a cortizone shot. Really!? This is not right... This could be a life changing exjperience! I'm nervous and scared that I will never regain full mobility without pain in my arm. What can we do as a group to prevent this? And possibly get help to pay for the medical treatments.

It was probably given too high in the shoulder. A cortisone shot may help but I had to have physical therapy. But alas, it did get better and I have 90% of my previous range of motion. The problem is the techs giving the shots in the drug stores don't know the dangers of giving it too high in the shoulder. But my orthopedic doc (that I went to after my hot/problem) knew all about the potential problems. And even if it happens 1 in 100, no one wants to be the 1. I hope you get to feeling better soon.

I got my flu shot at Walgreens, one month ago in my left shoulder area(high dose, because I turned 60 this year). (I also got a Shingle shot two weeks prior to the flu shot: that did not cause any pain) The flu shot itself did not hurt, but the next day it was sore, which has never happened before. It still is sore and getting progressively worse. It hurts to lay on my left side and can barely lift my arm. I am physically active, do yoga and workout and now am very limited as to what I can do. I tried icing it tonight which didn't help. I will try heat tomorrow. I take Meloxicam for my hip, which was helping my shoulder, but the pain and range of motion is getting worse every day. HELP!!!

Ok it's now 2013, but I have some important info I would like to post here, and hope some of you that posted here back in 2010 will see it. I am in Norway and due to a forthcoming travel to Ghana I decided to get a booster with the yellow fever vaccine. I received the booster shot in April 5, 2013. The first time I took this vaccine was in November 2003. On April 8 2013, I suddenly got a very strong pain in my left shoulder and it radiated up my neck on the left side all the way up to the ear and also sometimes down the left albue all the way to the left hand. I've been doing extensive research on the net to find out how I can get well again, since my doctor only gave me a prescription on NSAID medicine (Ibuprofen). This is anti-immflammation medicine and it did not work at all so I stopped taking that after 5 days. What I have learned from this forum is that it's not only the yellow fever vaccine (which contain living, weakened yellow fever virus) that could create pain and problems when stretching the arm straight out and up above shoulder level, and problems pointing the arm up behind the back. On this forum many people reported the same problems that I have had, but from a regular flu vaccine. One thing these two vaccines have in common, is that they are both vaccines containing the viruses they're designed to give the people being vaccinated protection against. I received the shot in my right shoulder, but the pain and problems with moving my arm occurred only in my left shoulder/shoulder joint. Therefore I am inclined to state that it's not the adminstration or placement of the injection that caused the pain and problems with moving the shoulder in any desired direction. Rather I think that it's the virus that is injected and possible weakness in the the patient's immune system that caused the problem. After reading lots of suggestions on how to treat this on the internet, I decided to try one of them, which is to take extra magnesium in pillform bought from a local pharmacy. Yesterday I took the first pill with 300 mg magnesium, and only 2 hours after the first pill yesterday, the pain was gone! It still hurt a little in my left arm in the evening when going to sleep. But in the morning after a good night sleep, I could not feel any significant pain in the arm, when I was still lieing down, before getting up to start the new day. Today I took the second pill, and the pain is still much relieved, compared to before beginning to take extra magnesium. What magnesium does is to strenghthen a person's muscles on the cell level and help with muscles to relax. Magnesium is needed for more than 300 biochemical reactions in the body. It helps maintain normal muscle and nerve function, keeps heart rhythm steady, supports a healthy immune system, and keeps bones strong. I would reccommend any who get this problem with their shoulder to take magnesium together with Vitamin D, preferably together with Vitamin D3. Of course I still have problems with mobility of my shoulder, but I feel much better after beginning taking magnesium. To get back the mobility of my arm, I think this will take some time to heal, maybe several months and possibly up to a year. I'll report back here later this year if I manage to get back mobility in the shoulder. I have today ordered a product called Immiflex that I hope will fix the mobility of my shoulder, since I believe it was a virus (from the vaccine) that was the cause of all this. It's sort of a short in the dark, but if it fixes my arm so I can move it freely, I'd report back later. About Immiflex: ImmiFlex contains Wellmune WGP (Beta 1,3/1,6 Gluco Polysaccharide), potent structural carbohydrates derived from the cell walls of Bakers yeast, as well as a high levels of Vitamin D, which both are well known to stimulate our immune system. Ok bye, and I hope this can help some people to recover! *John*

John, Thank you so much for your input...I too have begun to think that it could be related to our immune system (I was exposed to Herpes), or even to intolerance (allergic reaction) since not everyone has suffered the same, I have also thought this can very well be applied to the vaccines and cause of Autism. You are the only one who has come up with a possible solution. I will try the magnesium and Vitamin D, and report back. Hilda
