Five Top Reasons Why Exercise is Important for Aging

Exercise Reduces Cognitive Decline

Research in the field of aging and cognitive function indicates that individuals who are physically active have a reduced risk of impaired cognitive function. Cognition refers to a range of high-level brain functions like remembering information, and comprehending ideas and speech. Regular physical activity, particularly during the middle and later years of life, appears to protect against cognitive impairment in later life. Photo: Getty Images

Exercise May Potentially Prevent Muscle Loss

The loss of muscle mass and function comes with aging. This condition is called sarcopenia, which is a serious degenerative condition that generally begins during the fourth decade of life. A decrease in physical activity, protein synthesis and hormone levels appear to contribute to this condition. Frailty increases the chance for falls and fractures. Photo: Getty Images

Exercise Reduces Risk for Certain Illnesses

Gaining weight in midlife increases the risk for developing certain illnesses, such as cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes. Having too much body fat contributes to the development of osteoarthritis, hypertension, gout and gallstones. Obesity increases the chance of developing breast, endometrial and colon cancers. Regular physical exercise, along with a proper diet, can help seniors maintain a healthy weight. This potentially reduces the risk for a heart attack and stroke. Photo: Getty Images

Exercise Helps Relieve Arthritis Pain & Stiffness

Mild to moderate physical activity, such as tai chi, walking and swimming, helps ease the pain and joint stiffness associated with arthritis. Regular physical exercise strengthens the muscles around the joints and maintains bone strength. Lack of exercise actually increases joint stiffness and pain. Exercise Improves Sleep, Mood & Energy

Regular physical activity boosts your levels of strength and energy, helps you sleep better and elevates your mood. When you are physically fit, you feel better about your self and have an improved sense of well-being. Photo: Getty Images

I have noticed on all your slides, you are missing one last "secret" or tip. If you say 6 secrets, there should be 6 - not 5. If you say 10, let there be 10 - not 9.

Just a thought.
