Dealing with Polymyositis Join this Group

Hi All!

By HERWriter Guide January 28, 2011 - 9:53am

I'd like to thank Kdupell for starting this group. For those of us unaware of this condition, Polymyositis is a disease in the muscles that usually affects the trunk of the body, although is also seen elsewhere. It's a progressive disease that can cause a lot of pain, and causes the muscles to lose strength.

More can be read on our Polymyositis page here: https://www.empowher.com/condition/polymyositis

Kdupell, I do hope others who are going through the same thing can join in the discussion. In the meantime, can you tell us a little about your life and how polymyositis is affecting you?

I hope to hear back from you soon!

My diagnosis came as quite a surprise...after many months of knowing something was wrong and having every test under the sun. I finally got the opportunity to ask for a muscle biopsy when I had to have my gall bladder removed on an emergency basis. Sure enough...there WAS something wrong. This was in July 2010. I discussed the results with my primary care doctor and in September 2010 I started treatment with a Rheumatologist in Philadelphia, Pa.
Therapy with 60mg of prednisone and methotrexate began. I had to be taken off of the methotrexate but the prednisone seemed to be doing the trick by December 2010. At the beginning of 2011 I noticed that things seemed to be getting worse and my symptoms coming back. My daughter and her family moved in with us. I could help her with the baby and she could help me around the house. I have since had to apply for social security disability...luckily I was approved. At 48 I am a stay at home Grandma with limited mobility and much pain. I've found a new rheumatologist and we're working on a hew care plan.
