Has anyone read into the new connection between celiac's disease and the thyroid? What does other people think of this?
I read that milk products (since cows are given so many growth hormones and such any more is also one of the things that is affecting the thyroid. I have cut back on milk products and bread for the past two months-and I have lost almost 25 lbs and I do feel a big difference.
One clinical study have shown that pevalence of celiac disease in people with Hashimoto' (autoimmune thyroid condition) is up to 13%. This fact can be partly explained by a common genetic predisposition. Both celiac and Hashimoto’s diseases are reported to be associated with the genes CTLA-4, HLA-DQ2 and HLA-DQ8 and share common trigger of the disease gluten. There are also other digestive factors
that affect thyroid autoimmunity.
Will do! So far this week has not been easy, a twice I have eaten bread while out to eat. It just seems to be second nature and I don't even think about it until after I ate it! Bread and baked goods just seem to be so much quicker than preparing stuff yourself, I guess the most challenging thing is just learning how to take time to prepare meals yourself in the first place :)
Yes, please let me know how this goes and I am going to continue to research as much as I can because I really do not want to be on medications for the rest of my life-but my thyroid was so messed up my feet and hands were swelled. And if you come across any more information please send it my way, appreciate this:)
We Buster22, I have been told that I need to go gluten-free, and have been attempting to convert for the last couple of weeks. One doctor told me that anyone with Hashimoto's should go gluten-free.
Not sure how I feel about this, but within a month or so I can tell you if it makes a difference! It is just not something I ever had to do, but feeling better is a must.
I also had one doctor tell me that the antibody that attacks the thyroid is very simular to the one that is present in celiac or disease (or something like that) so the best way to control the Hashimoto's is by giving up gluten.
I am patiently waiting for them to develop a pill I can take so that I can eat anything, but until that happens it is off the health food store to find alternitives to gluten. :(
