What do you tell your friends when your feeling "ill"?

By April 30, 2011 - 8:40am

There are many days in the life of a thyroid disease sufferer that they are just not up to par, and unable to do even normal everyday things. When one of these days comes along, what do you tell your friends and family? Or are they like my friends, who almost expect you to be ill, yet think it is all in your head?

Thanks Tif, still trying to get the hang of it all!

Hope your feeling good, and let me know if there is anything I can do to help! Still researching and learning a lot myself, but hopefully together we can find improvement in our lives, and make the most out of every day like normal people!

I whole heartedly agree with you...I'd much rather turn the anger into something positive than negative and make a difference! Thank you for allowing me to "vent" to others and for starting this group, its a huge step in the right direction for others out there going through this all alone. Have a beautiful day! Lobotomy - def thought about it! but they would still try to shove anti-depressants down my throat so not worth it!!!

It has been very frustrating finding the right doctor, and as much of a pain that it is, when you finally do they will move to another state. :)

BUT, we can help each other, and I hope we can find enjoyment in knowing it is NOT IN OUR HEADS, and we are NOT DEPRESSED!

I hear ya, and I know exactly how you feel. Lets use that anger to make a difference :)

Thanks to all for caring & sharing! I'm glad to know that I'm not crazy and its not all in my head and I'm not depressed..I'm angry also!! It seems to me that the doctors just want to give you a pill and send you on your way..well, we all know that doesn't work all the time. And to those who don't understand, ah, well..they can kiss my rear. I really wish that it did shed some light on my husband when he took one of my pills by mistake...but mostly he just complains and says "you need to go back to the doctor" UGH! I'm fed up with the doctors...they hear me, but are not listening. I really wish there were some cure for this, or alternative besides a lobotomy...LOL! Thank you all for being so kind! Hang in there! Sincerely, Tif

Welcome to the group!

I totally hear ya! At this point, I have just stopped trying to explain to people, since they all too wonder if it is in my head. Though it was not funny, it was nice that your hubby could get a little idea of how things feel :) Has he changed his viewpoint on things at all since then? I am sure having a sister with it too helps (my sister has finally been diagnosed with it, although she is still trying to pretend it doesn't have anything to do with how crappy she feels and why she sleeps 16 hours a day) but at least I am not alone.

As for doctors, I am about ready to just throw my hands up and never go back to one again. At least after starting a thyroid support group in my hometown, I have met a couple of people that have other doctors they suggest, so it is opening up other avenues for care. Thyroid disease is just so misunderstood, as are the thyroid patients. Thank GOD we now have the internet to connect with one another and gather actual medical studies to take to our doctors, other wise we would still be in the dark and feeling like crap the rest of our lives!

Not sure which type of medication you are on, but it is worth looking into alternatives. I have recently met a woman who had a TSH of 6, yet had absolutely no symptoms and had no idea she was hypo. She takes Synthroid, and has no problems with it. At least she can admit that although some patients do well on Synthroid, some patients (like myself) do not, and in fact can do better on dessicated thyroid medications which include T3.

I had found a great DO in town that was willing to work with me and try things out, but he ended up moving to FL. I almost wanted to move with him! Finding a good doctor is hard, but not impossible.

Just remember you are not alone, there are others like yourself that are not "happy" with the way they feel, and are not going to sit back and be miserable the rest of their lives. AND we are not depressed. We are too angry at not being treated as a person to be depressed. It is time for us to demand better care :)

Best Regards,

Given that most of my friends seem to have a myraid of "illnesses" they are each plagued with..............I personally don't care what they think when I say I am not feeling well. Then again, I rarely say it so when I do they actually listen......LOL Out of all my friends, I'm the healthiest one. AND I'm the only smoker in the bunch too! Go figure! LOL

I tell them that I'm not feeling very well..although it seems to fall on deaf ears. Its almost like they expect me to not feel well and yes, I know they believe its all in my head...which is literally mentally hard on me. When I try to explain to them what it is I have and why I do not function "properly" all the time, they think I'm making it up. My sister is the only one who gets it, since she also has thyroid difficulties. My friends and family seem to think that I should be running back to the doctor constantly to adjust my medication...and I do follow up with my blood work all the time, but sometimes the medication just doesn't do the trick. The only thing that actually shed some light on my circumstances, was when my husband & I were on vacation and we had our medications on the dresser. Well, he didn't have his glasses on and accidently took one of my thyroid pills, instead of his. Well, he became ill...cold, then hot, then sweating, nausea..etc. Although It wasn't funny, it gave me the opportunity to tell him that this is exactly how I feel if my medication is off. Still some understanding would be appreciated from those who do not understand.
