Four ingredients to always avoid

There are four major ingredients to always avoid: barley, wheat, triticale and rye. Some sources also include oats on the list. iStockphoto/Thinkstock

Beer

Those who are on a gluten-free diet should not drink beer, as it contains barley. iStockphoto/Thinkstock

Bread

Baked goodies

People should pay close attention to the ingredients in cakes, cookies, pies and other bakery items. These items contain gluten unless specified as being gluten-free. iStockphoto/Thinkstock

Soup

In general soups should be avoided because these can contain gluten or can be cross-contaminated by it. Paying close attention to the ingredient list can help alleviate the chance of accidentally consuming gluten. iStockphoto/Thinkstock

Processed lunch meats

Medication and vitamin supplements.

Prior to starting a new medication or vitamin, you should ask your doctor whether the pills contain gluten. Pharmaceutical companies often use it as an ingredient to bind the products together. iStockphoto/Thinkstock

Play dough

If your child is diagnosed with celiac disease or any other health concern that forces her to abstain from consuming gluten, you might want to reconsider the toys she plays with. Play dough contains flour and trace amounts of gluten so finding an alternative might be in order. While not technically a food, small children may accidentally ingest it. iStockphoto/Thinkstock

Potato and tortilla chips

Potato and tortilla chips should also be consumed with caution. They may contain gluten or be contaminated with it. Check the ingredient list before you eat them. Comstock/Thinkstock

French fries

Not only is the risk of cross-contamination almost unavoidable (as other items are fried in the fryer as well), but they can contain gluten. Eating fries from fast food vendors should be avoided and at-home creations should be kept separate from foods containing gluten. Comstock/Thinkstock

What you can do

The most important thing you can do to prevent gluten consumption is to check the labels on pre-packaged foods and educate yourself. Many restaurants and other food vendors are creating options that cater to the needs of the gluten-free community. An increasing number of gluten-free foods are being developed, so there is no need to feel excluded. iStockphoto/Thinkstock
