As a doctor who helps a lot of women with fertility, I was thrilled to see an article about having sex every day and its effect on sperm. Everyone has their own idea of when and how to make a baby. Some subscribe to the every other day method. Some save it up for weeks only to perform around ovulation. And for some it’s still random chance.

At the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology, Dr. David Greening announced that 81 percent of men with damaged sperm who had sex every day showed a 12 percent improvement. The idea is to rid the body of sperm before it has a chance to hang out and become more damaged. Sperm can be damaged a number of ways including drugs, alcohol, smoking, heat (cell phones in the front pocket, laptops on the lap, hot tubs), radiation, lack of nutrients and genetics.

I realize a lot of couples undergoing in vitro fertilization may be asked to store up sperm by abstaining, especially if his count is low. However, if his count isn’t low but they are damaged, consider an “out with the old and in with the new” approach.
