Dr. Saks tells women what test they should ask their doctors for if they are concerned about their cholesterol.

Dr. Saks:
A basic lipid profile contains all of the different types of cholesterol. We need to know the total cholesterol: the bad cholesterol which blocks up in the heart arteries which is called the LDL, the good cholesterol or the HDL, which helps lower your risk of heart disease, and the triglycerides which are the fats in the blood. That’s a complete lipid profile or cholesterol profile. It’s not enough just to know the total cholesterol number, and this test is best performed if you don’t eat or drink starting from midnight the night before, so about an 8 to 12 hour fast gives the most accurate information.
