Diagnosis of MS is not always straightforward and depends upon clinical examination, verification of recurrent episodes of disability interrupted by periods of remission, and/or a generally progressive degree of impairment. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) detection of characteristic central nervous system features, detection of immunoglobulin in cerebrospinal fluid and measurement of neurologic function often provide support for a diagnosis of MS.
