Stress is something we hear about a lot lately. But if we look back, the term was not around before the 1950s (Selye) and recently most of us face stress on a daily basis. Stress is a phenomenon that recently developed in a way, that sometimes is hidden unless we take a step back to observe it. We may think that stress only affects the way we look at things, but many studies show that we actually get physical consequences from it.
Daily office routine – the strain from work is shown to have increased the risk for coronary disease. (Krantz) The way we have shifted towards office/ service related jobs and the rise of coronary disease as the main cause of death in our time prove how much this new era has affected us. We see this all around us and we feel the effects ourselves when we have an important meeting or a touch call to make.
However, there are ways of preventing psychological stress taking over our lives. Studies show that a positive attitude and enthusiasm in day to day life can help alleviate the risk of heart problems by 22 percent. (Davidson) So as long as we can find a balance in the workplace and day to day joys we can take care of our responsibilities and our bodies. We can try and find joy in other aspects of our lives so as to overcome the psychological stress.
All in all, we know that we experience physical distress due to psychological stress, but there are ways to deal with it and not let stress overcome us. As a relatively modern malady, stress can be dealt with a positive attitude, among others. As long as we acknowledge its effects we can make sure to find ways to reduce, if not remove it from our lives.
