I dread going to the same Body Conditioning class at the gym each week. Even as I attempt to distract myself with television, my mind tends to wander to all the other things that I could be doing instead of walking on the treadmill. If I hear Jillian Michael’s voice one more time on her 30-day shred video, I may just scream and wake the baby. It hit me the other day at the gym. I hate to work out. So why am I doing this?

Of course, I could stand to shed some weight and then once I do, I have to be able to maintain that weight. Giving up exercise is clearly not an option. One of things that I would like to change this New Year is to focus on things that I like to do and that keep me active at the same time. It is no secret to people who read my articles that I love Zumba classes. I am actually disappointed when I miss my two favorite classes. I have not been able to keep a steady schedule with these classes so perhaps that is the first thing that I can change.

Also, I am signing up for a new class, Ballet Fit. It is something that I have never done before I and my hope is that a change of routine will result in a change of my body. I have no idea what to expect but will let you know. Never considering myself a very coordinated dancer, this teacher will have her work cut out for her. (And I can finally cross “take a dance class” off my bucket list.)

As a person who once just didn’t “get” yoga, I now have a class that I look forward to going to. After being away from this yoga class for the last couple of weeks, I miss the strength that I used to feel in my arms. With a new pair of yoga pants, I am ready to make this a part of my weekly schedule again.

Aside from classes at the gym, I hope to concentrate on spending more active time with my kids. I don’t know how many calories that you can burn while playing soccer but it has to be more than watching Rachael Ray make a 30-minute meal. It’s good for me and good for them. It’s a win-win.

My hope for this New Year is to improve my health and fitness without sacrificing the fun.
