There is no way to prevent hyperthyroidism in cases of Graves’ Disease and most other causes. Factitious hyperthyroidism can be prevented—avoid taking in too much iodine (iodized salt, salt water fish) or taking too high a dose of thyroid replacement medication. Reducing or quitting smoking will also lower your risk of hyperthyroidism.
