After Bariatric Surgery Conception May Be Easier

Bariatric surgery, also known as weight loss surgery, can affect more than your weight. Some women who had previously been tried to conceive without success, find that now they are able to become pregnant.

It is best to let a year to a year and a half elapse after weight loss surgery before trying to conceive. This is a time of dramatic weight loss and a fetus could very well suffer from malnutrition if conception happens during that time frame. So reliable birth control is very important during this period.

If many of these women had become pregnant before their bariatric surgery, their children would have been at high risk for birth defects. This is often the case when a pregnant woman is obese. But after weight loss surgery, and a year or so to allow for weight loss, the risk for birth defects is greatly reduced.
