Dr. Carson Liu shares how many bariatric procedures he has performed and describes how long he has been working in this field.
Dr. Liu:
I have done well over 3,200 bariatric procedures. I have been doing them since the late 90s. I started off the laparoscopic gastric bypass program at UCLA and was the first one to do laparoscopic gastric bypasses. So, in that sense I have done well over 1,700 gastric bypasses and over 1,500 LAP-BANDs®. The LAP-BAND® has been the newer thing and it is the more popular procedure in my practice right now. So I, I have to say that I do more bands than bypasses on a day-to-day basis.
In terms of my practice, we have people visiting from around, you know, the nation. We have people coming up from the East Coast. We have people coming from Seattle and they fly in, they still see me for their LAP-BAND® adjustments. We’ve had a few from out of the country, as well, and from Canada as well as from the European countries.
So it is accessible to everyone whether or not they want to come to Los Angeles is another story, but we have a lot to offer in the city of Lost Angeles for them to basically take their family and vacation and have their surgery, relax, recover and then eventually go home. So we do follow up.
We’ve had people actually email me pictures of their laparoscopic incisions over the Internet. This is how we are doing it now-a-days when they are out of, you know, out of state, out of the country sometimes. And they return back to LA on a routine basis for follow up.
About Dr. Carson Liu, M.D., F.A.C.S.:
Dr. Liu received his medical degree from the University of Chicago, Pritzker School of Medicine and completed his internship, residencies and research fellowship at UCLA Medical Center. In 1998, Dr. Liu was appointed Assistant Professor of Surgery at UCLA Medical School where he continued to hone his skills in clinical practice, teaching and research. Dr. Liu has conducted extensive research and is widely published in the fields of Bariatric and gastrointestinal surgery; he is nationally recognized in his field and has lectured extensively to professional societies on these subjects. Dr. Liu is board certified in General Surgery and over the course of his career has performed more than 2600 bariatric surgeries.
