Arizona Cancer Center & UMC North sponsor ‘Partners in Survival’ sexuality & intimacy program for couples

The Arizona Cancer Center and UMC North are sponsoring the fourth of their quarterly workshops to help men communicate with and support the women they love who have or have had cancer. The upcoming workshop will focus on issues of sexuality and intimacy.

Lana Holstein, MD, a physician and head of the Sexuality and Vitality Department at Miraval Resort, will lead the workshop designed to aid men who are supporting women with cancer on Saturday, Nov. 8 from 8:30 to 11 a.m. at the Arizona Cancer Center at UMC North, 3838 N. Campbell Ave., Room 1290.

The Partners in Survival workshop includes programming and discussion for both men and women.

“Talking frankly about sex doesn’t – and shouldn’t – have to be taboo or scandalous,” Dr. Holstein says. “Straightforward and soulful communications are ingredients to a successful sexual relationship. Changes in women’s sexual function are common with cancer treatment and couples are likely to cope more successfully with those changes if discussed with caring and openness.”

Holstein, formerly Director of Women’s Health at Canyon Ranch, is the author of several books on sexuality and has developed workshops for individuals and couples on sexual enhancement and has appeared on nationally televised programs such as The Today Show and Oprah.

Women with cancer will attend the first 30-minute lecture by Dr. Holstein, and the group will break into men’s and women’s programs. Women will meet with a member of the Arizona Cancer Center’s Psychosocial Oncology Program and then rejoin their partners for an open discussion for all with Dr. Holstein.

Registration is requested by calling Lynn Barwick at (520) 694-0845 or emailing to ]]>lbarwick@azcc.arizona.edu]]> by Nov. 3. A light breakfast will be served. The Partners in Survival program is supported by the Arizona Cancer Center at UMC-North in partnership with Sunstone Cancer Support Center.

The Arizona Cancer Center is the state’s premier National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer center.
