You would not be pregnant if you have been having normal, though late periods.
During pregnancy, hormones keep the uterine lining intact. That is where the embryo has implanted and continues to grow and develop.
When you are not pregnant, hormone levels drop and cause the uterine lining to shed. That is the menstrual flow.
