Hi Anonymous,

Urethritis, as you and your boyfriend may or may not know, is swelling and irritation of the tube which carries urine from the body. The condition can be caused by the same bacteria that causes a urinary tract infection and some sexually transmitted diseases like gonorrhea and chlamydia or by a virus like herpes simplex. Sometimes, urethritis can be cause by injury or sensitivity to chemicals in spermicides or contraceptive jellies, cream or foams.
Now, if your boyfriend's case is caused by an infection and not an injury or sensitivity reaction, he should be getting treatment with antibiotics to eliminate the infection, prevent the spread of the infection and improve his symptoms. During treatment, he should avoid sex or use condoms during sex. As his sexual partner, you must be tested. You need to make an appointment with your doctor or visit a clinic. Testing will include blood tests, urine test, testing for STDs and possibly an ultrasound of the pelvis and pregnancy test.
