It appears that Obimet SR is used in India. The exact mechanism of action of metformin is unclear but it appears to reduce glucose absorption from the GI tract, reduce glucose production in the body and enhance insulin sensitivity by increasing peripheral glucose uptake and utilization. As Rosa said, it is prescribed for the treatment of type 2 diabetes. It is also used in the treatment of polycystic ovary syndrome and has been investigated for other diseases where insulin resistance may be an important factor.
