A thyroid infection is very rare.

More common is inflammation of the thyroid gland known as thyroiditis. There are several types: Hashimoto's Thyroiditis, De Quervain's Thyroiditis (symptoms include the rapid swelling of the thyroid gland and the thyroid gland is painful and tender) and Silent Thyroiditis.

The symptoms of a throat infection include pain, a sensation of heat in the throat, swollen lymph nodes. Sometimes, a person with a throat infection will have a fever, cough, congestion and flu-like symptoms.

Symptoms of thyroid cancer vary depending on the type. Generally, symptoms include cough, difficulty swallowing, an enlarged thyroid gland, hoarseness. neck swelling and thyroid nodules.
