One side effect of Plan B is changes to your menstrual cycle. That means your period could start later or earlier than normal. Also, your flow can be heavier or lighter than normal. So, the bleeding that you experienced is a side effect of taking Plan B.
For clarification, this is directly from the Plan B website, "The only way of knowing whether Plan B One-Step® has worked is when you get your next period, which should come at the expected time or within a week of the expected time. If your period is more than seven days late, you may be pregnant. "
