This is a very good question.
An intact hymen does not prevent pregnancy. Citing "The Encyclopedia of Family Health", "Sperm that comes into contact with the genital area, perhaps as a result of heavy petting, may still travel through a gap in the hymen and up into the vaginal canal."

The hymen is a thin fold of mucous membrane lying just within the vaginal orifice. It rarely covers the entrance of the vagina completely.
