The light bleeding may the result of two missed doses of birth control pills that you did not make up for.

Combination oral contraceptive pills contain a synthetic form of the female hormone, estrogen and progestin.

These synthetic hormones stabilize a woman's natural hormone levels, and prevent estrogen from peaking mid-cycle. Without the estrogen bump, the pituitary gland does not release other hormones that normally cause the ovaries to release mature eggs.

Synthetic progestin makes the uterine lining inhospitable to a fertilized egg.

By suddenly stopping the pill, you upset the hormone levels and triggered your body into starting a light menstrual flow.
