Guide (reply to Alemas)

Hello Alemas,

Taking your birth control pills each day and at the same time each day prevents pregnancy. You have screwed up your menstrual cycle. That is why your period is late.

Most birth control pills contain synthetic forms of two female hormones: estrogen and progestin. These synthetic hormones stabilize a woman's natural hormone levels, and prevent estrogen from peaking mid-cycle. Without the estrogen bump, the pituitary gland does not release other hormones that normally cause the ovaries to release mature eggs.

Plan B and Next Choice contain levonorgestrel, the same ingredient used in many birth control pills—and it works in a similar way. But the dose of levonorgestrel in Plan B and Next Choice is much higher than the dose found in a single birth control pill.

So, by taking an emergency contraceptive while taking birth control pills, you have overdosed yourself with synthetic hormones that regulate your menstrual cycle. You must stop taking an emergency contraceptive unless it is an emergency, such as you stop taking or missed several days of your birth control pills. It is dangerous to do otherwise.
