Hello Anonymous,

Breast pain that occurs independent of the menstrual cycle is referred to as noncyclic breast pain.

Noncyclic breast pain can result from things that affect breast structure. Examples are breast cysts, breast trauma, or prior breast surgery. Breast pain may also start outside the breast — in the chest wall, muscles, joints or heart, for example — and radiate to the breast.

Women with large breasts may have noncyclic breast pain related to the size of their breasts. Neck, shoulder and back pain may accompany breast pain due to large breasts.

Certain hormonal medications, such as oral birth control pills, can be associated with breast pain. Breast pain may be associated with certain antidepressants, including selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) antidepressants, such as fluoxetine (Prozac, Prozac Weekly, Sarafem) and sertraline (Zoloft).

If you are not using oral birth control pills and are not taking any of the above mentioned medications, you can start by reevaluating the type of bra that you wear. Try a firm support bra. Wear a sports bra when exercising.

If you continue to have pain, schedule an appointment with your doctor. You can expect to have a clinical breast exam and be asked about the location, intensity and duration of the pain. If necessary, further testing like a mammogram or ultrasound of the breasts may be recommended.
