The recommendation is to take the first pill as soon as possible following unprotected intercourse. The second dose is taken within 12 hours.
I cannot say why the pharmacist told you otherwise.
If you do not have any bleeding within three weeks of taking the pill, test. In the meantime, you may want to speak with your gynecologist.
