Genital herpes is a sexually transmitted disease, (STD) caused by the herpes simplex viruses type 1 (HSV-1) or type 2 (HSV-2). Usually, HSV-1 causes genital herpes in immunosuppressed individuals. In the U.S., about one out of six people aged 14 to 49 years have genital HSV-2 infection.
It is spread by having anal, vaginal, or oral sex with a person who has the disease.
A health care provider can diagnosis genital herpes by visual inspection, if there are symptoms. Most individuals infected with HSV-1 or HSV-2 experience either no symptoms or have very mild symptoms. Typically, one or more blisters appear on or around the genitals, rectum or mouth. A sample from the blisters can be taken and tested for the virus. Sometimes, the infection can be diagnosed between outbreaks with a blood test.
