Hello Anonymous,

I can appreciate your concern. The menstrual cycle is regulated by hormones. A hormonal imbalance is most likely the cause of having two periods in one month.

This can normally happen at two different times in a woman's life--puberty and perimenopause.

For a girl who has recently gone through puberty, it may take a while for menstrual cycles to become regular. In this case, two periods in one month is not usually something to be worried about. The cycles will usually regulate themselves within a matter of months.

For a woman who has recently begun perimenopause, levels of estrogen fluctuate, causing missed periods or two periods in one month. This is equally not something to be worried about.

However, if you do not fall into either of these age groups, and this pattern continues, you need to speak with your gynecologist.
