Guide

Hello Shelley,

I would like to welcome you to the EmpowHER community. Thank you for reaching out to us for additional information about the length of effectiveness of a non-hormonal IUD.

The most commonly used non-hormonal IUD is the copper IUD. Copper wire is wound around the stem of the T-shaped IUD. Copper is toxic to sperm. It causes the uterus and fallopian tubes to produce fluid that is kills sperm. This fluid contains white blood cells, copper ions, enzymes, and prostaglandins.

Shelley, your physician is correct. A non-hormonal IUD can remain in place for at least 10 years and still be effective. It is recommended that a hormonal IUD be replaced after 5 years.
