A pinched nerve occurs when there is compression or pressure on a nerve. Nerves extend from your brain and spinal cord. They send messages throughout your body. One warning sign of a pinched nerve is pain.
The compression can result when the nerve is pressed between ligaments, tendon or bone. Inflammation on a nerve root exiting the spine can cause neck or low back pain.
Treatment varies, depending on the severity and cause of the nerve compression. Your physician is your resource for prescribing treatment.
In general, treatment with medication includes the use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, such as ibuprofen, to reduce swelling. Oral corticosteroids are prescribed to reduce swelling and pain. Narcotics are used only for a brief time in cases of severe pain. Your physician might recommend a steroid injection to reduce swelling.
Physical therapy is recommended to help stretch and strengthen muscles.
In cases of severe nerve compression, surgery is needed when all other treatment options fail to relieve the symptoms.
