There are different types of radiation. Microwave ovens do not make food radioactive, but simply heat food by producing radiation which is absorbed by water molecules in the food. This makes the water molecules vibrate and produce heat, which cooks the food.
On the other hand, ionising radiation is made of high energy waves.The energy produced can get into cells and damage DNA. This can lead to cancer.
