Guide

Hello Anonymous,

Is this dark vertical line on only one fingernail or present on all of your fingernails? Have you injured that or those fingers/

Any type of trauma to the fingernail can produce a thin dark line on the fingernail. This is called a splinter hemorrhage. It is not serious, is common, and will eventually go away on its own.

Black lines can indicate a fungal infection. You need to see your doctor for diagnosis and treatment.

Dark lines that run from the cuticle to the tip of the nail can indicate the presence of melanoma. Melanoma is the most dangerous type of skin cancer.

You should be examined by your physician.
