The location of the lumps is critical. The lymph nodes in the underarm, called the axillary lymph nodes are the first place breast cancer is likely to spread. About 40 percent of women diagnosed with breast cancer have cancer in their axillary lymph nodes.
Talk with your primary care physician or gynecologist about the mammogram findings and point out your strong family history of breast cancer. Ask if a biopsy is recommended.
I was diagnosed with DCIS (Ductal carcinoma in situ)early stage last spring. It was picked up on a PET Scan, confirmed by mammogram, and type of cancer diagnosed with a biopsy. My personal recommendation is to question and ask for evidence that these lumps are only swollen lymph nodes.
