Hello Anonymous,

Welcome to EmpowHER and thank you for your question.

Plan B and all other emergency contraceptives are intended to be used only in emergency situations, and not as a regular form of birth control. The pill contains a high dose of a synthetic hormone. It prevents pregnancy by principally preventing ovulation.

So, your girlfriend took Plan B in September, again in October, and had a normal period afterwards. Now, did she take Plan B again in November after having unprotected sex? How long after unprotected sex did she have the vaginal spotting?

Since she missed having a period for November, I think she should take a home pregnancy test. If the results are negative, she needs to consult her gynecologist or primary care physician. If pregnancy is ruled out, she may have caused a hormonal imbalance by taking Plan B two consecutive months.

Regards,
Maryann
