Hello Anonymous,

A skin boil and a carbuncle are painful, pus-filled bumps that form under the skin when bacteria infect and inflame one or more of the hair follicles.

Furuncles, which is the medical term for boils, usually start as red, tender lumps. The lumps quickly fill with pus, growing larger and more painful until they rupture and drain.

A carbuncle is a cluster of boils that form a connected area of infection under the skin.

Most boils are caused by Staphylococcus aureus, a type of bacteria commonly found on the skin and inside the nose.

You are most likely to develop a boil if you are in close contact with an individual who has a staph infection, your immune system is compromised, you have diabetes or suffer with a skin condition such as eczema.

The development of a skin boil is not common during or at all related to pregnancy.

Hope this information is helpful to you.
