Hello Anonymous,

Was your son diagnosed with bipolar disorder by a physician?

Bipolar disorder, also known as manic-depressive illness, is a brain disorder that causes unusual shifts in mood, energy, activity levels, and the ability to carry out day-to-day tasks.

There are four basic types of bipolar disorder.

Bipolar disorder cannot be cured, but it can be treated effectively over the long-term. Proper treatment helps many people with bipolar disorder—even those with the most severe forms of the illness—gain better control of their mood swings and related symptoms. But because it is a lifelong illness, long-term, continuous treatment is needed to control symptoms.

Different types of medications can help control symptoms of bipolar disorder. Not everyone responds to medications in the same way.
The types of medications generally used to treat bipolar disorder include mood stabilizers, atypical antipsychotics, and antidepressants.

When done in combination with medication, psychotherapy can be an effective treatment for bipolar disorder. Cognitive behavioral therapy helps people with bipolar disorder learn to change harmful or negative thought patterns and behaviors. Family-focused therapy, interpersonal and social rhythm therapy, and psychoeducation are other options.

If you have not spoken with your son's doctor recently, I urge you to do so. Confirm the diagnosis and ask about the proper treatment options for your son.

Regards,
Maryann
