Hello Anonymous,

Welcome to EmpowHER. I am glad you reached out to us with your concern about a prolonged period.A period that lasts 17 days is abnormal at any age and puts you at risk for iron deficiency anemia.

Please call your gynecologist to report this today.

Menorrhagia is the medical term for menstrual bleeding that goes beyond one week.

Dysfunctional uterine bleeding (DUB) is another cause of prolonged menstruation. DUB can happen at any time during a woman's reproductive years, but most commonly affects those over age 40. DUB indicates a hormone dysfunction, which can impact the uterine lining’s stability and lead to irregular, heavy, or prolonged menstrual bleeding.

Uterine fibroids, which are non-cancerous growths of the uterus wall, endometrial hyperplasia, which is a thickening of the endometrium, a thyroid gland disorder, ovarian cysts, and uterine polyps are a few conditions that can cause abnormal menstrual bleeding.

Please keep us updated once you have consulted your doctor.

Regards,
Maryann
