Hello Anonymous,

Welcome to EmpowHER and thank you for coming to us with your concern.

The onset of irregular periods is one hallmark sign of early perimenopause, which is a time of fluctuations in estrogen and progesterone levels. Some women begin to experience this in their late 40s.

In response to your question, “Menopause is strongly genetically linked, so you’re very likely to fall within a few years either way of the age your mother was at menopause,” says Nanette Santoro, MD, director of the division of reproductive endocrinology and infertility at the University of Colorado-Denver School of Medicine and a member of the board of directors of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine.

You have reached menopause once you have not had a period for 12 consecutive months.

I hope this information is helpful.

Regards,
Maryann
