Menorrhagia is the medical term for menstrual periods with abnormally heavy or prolonged bleeding.
Normally, a balance between the hormones estrogen and progesterone regulates the buildup of the lining of the uterus called the endometrium, which is shed during menstruation. If a hormone imbalance occurs, the endometrium develops in excess and eventually sheds by way of heavy menstrual bleeding.
Considering that you are only 17 years old, this might be the cause of your very heavy period. But, I urge you to speak with a parent and schedule an appointment with a gynecologist or a primary care physician.
This is serious and needs to be evaluated by a doctor. Heavy bleeding leads to blood loss and puts you at risk for iron deficiency anemia.
