Guide

Hello Anonymous,

Welcome to EmpowHER and thank you for reaching out to us with your concern regarding a late period.

The menstrual cycle is regulated by a precise balance of four hormones. Any disruption in this balance causes irregularities.

In addition to pregnancy, perimenopause, which is marked by fluctuations in hormone levels, causes late or missed periods. Cortisol levels rise during times of high stress and cause a late or missed period. Extreme exercising, excessive weight loss or weight gain, problems with the thyroid gland and issues involving the ovaries can all cause menstrual cycle irregularities.

If you do not get a period at all for the month, I suggest you repeat the pregnancy test. Be sure to test in the morning and use the first urine of the day. If the result is negative, consult your gynecologist.

Regards,
Maryann
