Hi Anon, Thank you for sharing your question with the EmpowHER community.

The absence of periods is called Amenorrhea.  There are two types:  Primary Amenorrhea and Secondary Amenorrhea.  Primary is when a young woman hasn't had her period by the age of 16.  Secondary Amenorrhea is when a woman who has been having a normal menstrual, stops getting her period for three or more months.

Amenorrhea is caused by changes in the organs, glands and hormones involved in menstruation.  Cause include:

  • Stopping the use of birth control
  • Some birth control methods (Depo-Provera)
  • Stress
  • Thyroid Issue
  • Depression
  • Over exercising
  • Ongoing illness
  • Pregnancy
