Hi Anon,

Thank you for sharing your question with the EmpowHER community.

Vitamin D, also known as the " sunshine vitamin" because it produces in skin in response to sunlight, has many benefits. Besides being vital to strong bones and teeth, it also helps facilitate normal immune system function. It helps to improve our resistance against certain diseases.

It's been researched to possibly;

  • reducing your risk of multiple sclerosis
  • decreasing your chance of developing heart disease
  • helping to reduce your likelihood of developing the flu

You can get vitamin D from the sun and food, but that typically isn't sufficient.  That may be why your doctor prescribed vitamin D supplements.

The amount that is prescribed is typically relative to age.  The older we are, the need increases.  The amount you mentioned being prescribed is high, however, if you are deficient and currently facing health issues, that could be the reason.  Also, your doctor may be trying to prevent potential health issues as well.

Here's some additional information for you to review:

Does Vitamin D Really Help?

I hope this helps.

Be well,
