Hello Anonymous,

Welcome to EmpowHER. Thank you for seeking our help with your concern about a prolonged period. This is a good opportunity for me to stress to you and all our readers that an emergency contraceptive is a very strong pill with serious consequences if not taken properly.

Please call either your gynecologist or primary care physician today. Report what happened and follow your doctor's advice.

I think your prolonged period is the direct result of taking the emergency contraceptive pill, when it was not necessary.

Let me explain. The menstrual cycle is regulated by a precise balance of hormones. An emergency contraceptive contains a high dose of a synthetic hormone, which works to prevent pregnancy by preventing ovulation.

Ovulation occurs about 14 days before the start of your next period. Your own hormones work to make this happen. When you do not become pregnant during ovulation, your own hormones work to make your period start.

Even though your partner ejaculated inside you, ovulation had passed and your hormones were set to let your period start. By taking the pill, you caused an upset in the balance.
I think that is why you are still bleeding.

Regards,
Maryann
