Guide

Hello raemarie12,

Welcome to the EmpowHER community. Thank you for reaching out to us for a probable reason that your most recent period, which lasted five days, started out light red, got heavier and ended with brown discharge.

The menstrual cycle is regulated by a precise balance of hormones. Hormones are continuously changing during a four-week cycle, which can impact the color and consistency of your menstrual cycle.

Menstrual flow with a light pink appearance is usually a sign that estrogen levels are low, and brown discharge indicates old blood.

A lighter menstrual flow can signal hormonal changes, poor nutrition or stress.

If this pattern continues, consider scheduling an appointment with your gynecologist to rule out any underlying medical condition. Abnormally light periods could indicate an autoimmune disorder and/or polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).

Regards,
Maryann
