Hello Anonymous97,

Welcome to EmpowHER. I will do my best to provide you with information about Unwanted 72 and hopefully answer all of your questions.

Unwanted 72 is a single tablet containing 1.5 mg of synthetic progestin, levonorgestrel.

For this emergency contraception to be effective, it is necessary to take one 1.5 mg pil on a single day and within 72 hours of unprotected intercourse. It is 85% effective when taken 24 to 48 hours after unprotected intercourse.

Unwanted 72 blocks the actions of the hormones LH and FSH which are responsible for maturing the egg, preparing the womb to receive a fertilized egg and for the actual implantation of the egg in the uterine lining.

Anonymous97, since you took the pill about a day after expected ovulation, it may have been too late to block the actions of the luteinizing hormone and follicle stimulating hormone. Ovulation may have already occurred. But, since your boyfriend was wearing a condom when he attempted to penetrate your vagina, I do not think you were at risk for conceiving.

Unwanted 72 side effects include fatigue, headache, dizziness, breast tenderness,
vaginal bleeding or spotting before the anticipated date of period, body aches, muscle cramps, joint pains, nasal congestion, diarrhea, bloating, abdominal cramps, nausea and rarely vomiting.

The drug can cause a delay in your next monthly period, If your next period is late by for more than seven days after the expected date or a period beyond three weeks from the date of administration of this pill, then you should test for pregnancy.

Because the pill can cause a delay in your next period, I cannot say how soon after any withdrawal bleeding your next period will start. Vaginal bleeding does confirm pregnancy was prevented.

Regards,
Maryann
