Hello worriedworriedworried,
Welcome again to EmpowHER.
You are correct. Birth control pills prevent pregnancy by preventing ovulation.
You are protected as long as you take a daily active pill each day at the same time each. You lose protection once you miss a dose.
Your partner should wear a condom for the first week that you are on the pill. It will take about a week for hormones to build up.
It is safe to have intercourse without a condom during the last week when you do not take an active pill.
