Hi,

Last period 4/25/10. Cycles run about 24 - 26 days. On 5/14 my boyfriend and I had protected sex but the condum failed (yes, user error) I am not on the pill. My next period should have been between 5/20 and 5/22. Nothing on 5/23 took a HPT it was negative. Felt some cramping and breast tenderness (but I normally feel that right before my period). On 5/31/10, still no period took another HPT it was negative. Still no period. On 6/7/10 took another HPT (different brand than the first two) and still negative. Now once again feeling cramping and breast tenderness... I am under a lot of stress at work and recently increase my vitamin D and began taking Iodine supplement to battle an long time battle with Fatigue (we are talking months of Fatigue and it is not S.A.D). I am 40 years old and in good health expect some weight i need to loose. My plan, if no period shows up this week, is to take a 4th HPT test (as they were two to box) on 6/14/10 and if it is negative... than go to the doctor. But still my mind is racing... your thoughts...

I can understand why your mind is racing!

Home pregnancy tests are about 99% effective at detecting any of the "pregnancy hormones" once you have missed your period. Since you have taken three of them, at different times and all after your expected period did not start, you can trust in the results.

There are many reasons for irregular, or even missed, periods. For women in their 40s, a missed period (not due to pregnancy) could be excessive stress, weight gain/loss that is extreme or sudden, recent illness, new medication, underlying medical condition or even perimenopause.

Since you have another HPT, your plan to take it again on 6/14 sounds good, but it will most likely (99%!) be negative result again.

Please feel free to call your doctor's office, too, if you are worried about a missed period.

Does this help?
