I am 3 week post op total hysterectomy. I was left with only my ovaries and have been experiencing upper abdominal pain mostly near my diaphram and rib cage. The pain comes and goes but is not gas...Is this normal? I am 36 y.o.

I second Maryann's advice to call the gynecologist who performed the surgery to let them know what you are experiencing.

If your surgery was performed through an incision into your navel, the surgeon uses gas/air to inflate and tent your abdomen and pelvis during the surgery. This can cause abdominal, pelvic and shoulder pain for several days after surgery.

Rather than guess at what might be causing your pain, especially because your surgery was only 3 weeks ago, it is important to let the surgeon know what you're experiencing. If the receptionist in the office wants to relay your message to the surgeon, you can ask to speak with the doctor directly.

Was the hysterectomy performed as a laparoscopic procedure? If so, it is quite possible that there may be gas( from the procedure not produced from your digestive tract). It is also possible that you have gastritis. There could be several things that are causing the upper abdominal pain.

Since you are only 3 weeks post-op, give your surgeon a call. He or she may want you to come into the office to be evaluated or may refer you to your primary care physician.
