So I had a period around the 28th of February and finished in early March (my periods usually come around the 21st). It's now the 19th of April and I still haven't received my March period. Could this be due to finishing in March it's just counted as a period for that month also? Please help. I have took pregnancy tests and they say negative but not having my period doesn't add up as I have always been regular every month, never missed one.

Hello Anonymous,

Welcome to EmpowHER. Thank you for reaching out to our community for help figuring out why you have not had a period since late February. Since it is almost April 21, we cannot blame it on your period ending in late March.

As long as you tested correctly, specifically tested using the first urine of the day, you can accept the negative results as valid and you are not pregnant.

Let's look for another possible cause.

The menstrual cycle is regulated by of a hormonal interaction between the pituitary gland in the brain and the ovaries. Every month the female sex hormones, estrogen, follicle stimulating hormone, luteinizing hormone and progesterone, prepare the body to support a pregnancy, and without fertilization cause menstruation.

Anonymous, you mention that you have always been regular. Something caused a recent hormonal imbalance.

Depending on your age, perimenopause might be the reason . The fluctuations estrogen and progesterone levels cause changes in the menstrual cycle. Experiencing a space of 60 days or more between periods, indicates late perimenopause.

A period of intense stress, being very ill, extreme weight gain or weight loss and excessive exercising, such as preparing to run a marathon can cause a missed period.

This is just general information. Talk with your gynecologist if you are under the age of 50, or even late 40s and none of the above mentioned conditions apply to you.

Maryann

Can't be premenopause because I'm only 17 , maybe I'm just being paranoid. Do you think it would be best to wait and see in my period comes this month? Thanks for you help and advice

Hi Siobhanlynnexx,

Definitely not perimenopause:)

Wait and see if you get your period this month. Otherwise, at your age, still consider scheduling an appointment with a gynecologist.
You want rule out a hormonal issue, such as PCOS or polycystic ovarian syndrome.

Will do , it's just that they have been every month for 6 years and yet I missed one and it is possible to be pregnant as me and my boyfriend had unprotected sex

Hi Siobhanlynnexx,

Indeed, it is possible that you haven't gotten a period because you are pregnant, now that you share you and your boyfriend had unprotected sex.

You can either retake a pregnancy test. Test in the morning, use the first urine of the day. Before that , read and follow all directions carefully. Be sure it is a name brand test and not expired.

Or, just schedule an appointment with a gynecologist or visit a women's health clinic to have a blood pregnancy test done. I would opt for this since you might already be two months pregnant.

Regards,
Maryann
