Anyone else suffering from Keratosis Pilaris? (KP - 'bumpy' skin condition, mainly on upper arms)

Does anyone else have KP?

It's a skin condition where you have those red 'chicken bumps' mainly on the upper arms. I have it - badly!

Now that I sniff spring in the air, my arms are exposed and I'm looking for something that may work.

I have tried Lac Lotion - didn't work. I tried KP Doctor this winter - didn't work.

Sadly - a lot of sun helps but I'd rather KP than skin cancer. Retin-A helps too but I'd have to be permanently out of the sun and that's not a lot of help either.

This is a very common condition. Some of us have it worse than others. Right now I am relying on an exfoliant, daily moisturizer and self-tanning cream to stave off that redness!

I'd love some more tips!

Both my mother and I have this condition. I have cleared it completely without any use of creams, serums or chemicals. Being from Japan, I have access to many things people in America generally don't see. But thanks to the internet what I use is easily obtained and very cheap! What is it? It's a wash cloth. But not just any typical washcloth. It's made from a special nylon material and won an award for it's invention. Not only does it help eradicate KP, it also makes the rest of your body baby soft, removing dead skin that exfoliates and other exfoliating type cloths and items leave behind. Just don't use it on your face!!!! (I can not stress this enough!) It is called Salux Beauty Skin Cloth.

Now, some sites will charge silly amounts for this cloth, I have seen crazy prices like 20USD. But at amazon, you can find these as cheap as 2.45. Use it every day in the shower, and you'll notice with continued use that your KP will begin to clear up, and the ingrown hairs that result from KP will be a thing of the past. I then also wax the fine hairs on my upper arms to slow down the KP if there is any day I forget to use my Salux cloth and use my sea sponge instead.. lol.

Notes about the cloth.

1. With proper care one can last 10+ years.
2. Will never grow bacteria (after use, shake out cloth (snapping) roughly to remove water) dries almost instantly.
3. Much longer than Western wash cloths, making whole body washing very easy.
4. Makes body wash and soap last longer.. very little creates a large amount of lather (do not expose cloth to a lot of water once lathered), never use on skin without soap or body wash in the cloth.
5. Rinses clean VERY quickly.
6. You will LOVE this cloth!
7. Hand wash this cloth, do not put in washing machine or dryer!
8. Try to remove shedding hair from your head before using, or wear shower cap while using the cloth. Hair is very difficult to remove from the fibers of the cloth. I really recommend to do this. ^__^

I've had KP on my arms, and on my legs for my whole entire life. It was something that I had just gotten used to, and dealt with. In the summer the sun somewhat would dry it out, and it would look better. However, during the winter it just looks awful.

I just received the Made from Earth "Pure Aloe Skin Treatment" in the mail 2 days ago, and using it first thing in the morning, and right before bed has already improved the condition, and made the bumps on my legs almost disappear. When i wanted to purchase this product I read reviews from people and how it worked for some. The point of the matter is, that this product does have the ability to work. My arms and legs, FEEL and LOOK smoother. Smooth skin is something I never thought I would be able to achieve in these places. Also, the bottle is a generous size I dont think I'll be reordering for another two months. Well worth it.

I tried most of that prescription stuff and pricey lotions with no luck. What works for me:

Make a sugar scrub with 4 cups sugar, 1 small bottle of vitamin E oil from Trader Joe's or GNC, and olive oil (any olive oil will work, but the lighter the color, the less it smells like olive oil). Pour the sugar and vitamin E oil into a large bowl, then add enough olive oil to cover the sugar with a thin layer on top. Stir. Add more oil if necessary. Make sure there's about 1/4" of oil on top of the sugar. Then, ladle into mason jars for storage. I like to add a bit of natural fragrance from someplace like whole foods or www.dragonmarsh.com (the gingerbread spice scent is amazing!).

In the shower, once your skin is really wet, take a bit of the scrub and rub on your arms until the sugar is dissolved. Use every single time you shower. For me, the bumps were gone in a week and have only come back when I stopped using the scrub.

My grandfather believed in the healing and healthful properties of olive oil, using it on his hair and skin, and he looked amazing well into his 80's. Thank you for your recipe. My daughter has keratosis pilaris and has had a tough time dealing with it. I'll have to pass this on to her.

I am going to take a look at some of the sites and see if I look into the dermal nectar.
I did not know what it was called but sure enough, that's what I have on my arms. Except, since I am not fair skinned it doesn't really look red, just a different pigment of my skin color. I haven't seen a dematologist lately but the last one I had prescribed Retin-A and it just wasn't something I could do. I used to apply it at night but every single morning I had to make sure I showered to remove the cream prior to going out. Showering that much cannot possibly be good for your skin, especially when it is already dry.

Let me know if you find something, Susan.

I used to have this condition. I am very pale and I went to my dermatologist who prescribed a number of different keratosis pilaris cream options.
These can include lactic acid, corticosteroids, topical immunomodulators and retinoids. Anyhow, it worked! I loofahed and used the cream and it cured the problem. My boyfriend, who is dark skinned has the bumbs very badly. Nothing over the counter works for him so he will be going to the dermatologist too!

I use AmLactin. Also, if you want more information about KP, there's a new website called littleredbumps.com that's been created specifically to help KP sufferers manage their dry skin. That's where I found AmLactin and it is the only thing that has worked for me.

Dermal nectar still works for me.

My daughter decided to try an aloe-based lotion this weekend, largely because her slight sunburn seemed to aggravate the KP. I'll let you know if she has had any success controlling her condition, as I'll probably see her this weekend for a training run.
