arachnoid cyst

I just found out a week ago that I have an arachnoid cyst. It was discovered due to an MRI looking for MS. I have had extreme pressure behind my left eye causing me to loose most of my side vision in this eye. Other symptoms have been dizziness, off balance, sensitivity to light and sound. I have an appointment with a neurosurgeon in about a week. I want to be prepared and know what to expect going in (at least the best I can). Most of what I have read online has been so contradicting or from years ago and I know the medical field is always advancing. I am extremely worried and don't want to worry if it is not needed. Thank you any information would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the EmpowHER community! It is wonderful that you are educating yourself before your doctor's appointment, and I have provided some helpful links where other women are discussing their arachnoid cyst diagnosis and treatment options:

- Arachnoid Cyst Support Group

- SHARE: Blog Developed for those with arachnoid cysts (March 2010)

- How many women are dealing with arachnoid cysts?

- Rare brain condition called posterior fossa arachnoid cyst has wreaked havoc on my life

- Arachnoid cyst can compromise cerebellum

These posts above contain a wealth of information, some as long as 14 pages with multiple posts, and are still active with other women educating themselves on their condition.

To answer your direct question, I have not been able to find any information regarding the exact size of the cyst, as the medical literature primarily focuses on the location of the cyst, and monitoring the cyst over a period of time for growth. You can read more about brain cysts: American Brain Tumor Association (ABTA). The file will open a pdf with basic information on treatment options.

I know this is a great deal of information to review before your appointment. Please ask as many follow-up questions as you would like, and we will continue researching the answers to your questions.

I would like to add that I know its roughly 6cm in size was explained that it was like a smashed golf ball and a half....was wondering if this was considered large? Given I haven't spoken to the neurosurgeon I am not exactly sure where it is located.
